Course selection and course registration

Research and studies at KIT Department of Economics and Management are characterized by interdisciplinary networking and a strong focus on current developments. Our department is the largest training center for students of Industrial Engineering and Management in Germany. It also offers a degree program in Economics Engineering (BSc and MSc), as well as one in Information Systems (BSc and MSc, jointly with the Department of Informatics) and one in Business Mathematics (MSc, jointly with the Department of Mathematics).
Exchange students are welcome to choose courses from all study programs offered by our department, at both the Bachelor's and Master's level.
Any prerequisites or possible restrictions—such as limited availability of places—will be communicated by the respective course instructors and listed in the course descriptions.
Detailed information about the courses available in our programs can be found in the module handbook (s. bellow) and the KIT course catalogue.
Module Handbook
Regarding the structure of the module handbook, please note that the first section always provides information on modules, which are only relevant for students seeking a degree at KIT. Exchange students who do not pursue a degree at KIT do not need to fill whole modules when choosing courses at our department, but can select individual courses. You can find links to detailed descriptions of our courses listed in the second part of the module handbook ("Module component exams"). The module handbook also provides information on ECTS Credits, term, language instruction and study cycle (all Bachelor and Master level courses are contained in the respective handbook - please choose the last one for nondegree students): Module handbook. The module handbook for the upcoming semester will be published approximately six weeks before the start of the lecture period.
Course types and registration
We have three main types of courses at the KIT Department of Economics and Management, which are specified in our module handbook:
- Vorlesung = lecture
Registration: Usually no prior registration; no compulsory attendance (exceptions possible). If you would like to take the exam of the lecture, you have to add the lecture into your personal study plan. Otherwise, you are not able to register the exam. - Übung / Tutorium = exercise course / tutorial
Registration: Information on registration to this course type will be announced during the first session of the lecture.
Assessment: cf. lecture - Seminar = seminar course
Registration: Limited number of places; prior registration compulsory! Applications start during the previous semester: online via WiWi-Portal or by sending an email to the professor. Please be aware, that every institute has its own rules and deadlines. We advise to regularly visit the WiWi-Portal and institutes’ websites in order not to miss registration deadlines. If you don’t find any information regarding a seminar, try by visiting the institute’s homepage.
Assessment: Graded seminar exercises, such as active participation, group-projects, presentations and papers/homework.
It is also POSSIBLE to write thesis at KIT. You have different options:
- If you want to work on your specific topic: either you propose a topic to an institute where a tutor might be interested in assisting you OR you propose a topic to a tutor that is already tutoring a similar project
- In case you prefer to work on an existing subject, you can check the topics offered by the different institutes
- Another possibility would be to find a thesis in an institute that doesn't belong to the KIT-Department of Economics and Management or in a company, in which cases you have to find a second tutor from the KIT-Department of Economics and Management, who must approve the topic first.
