Module handbook "Information Engineering and Management" M.Sc.

Online version or PDF

The module handbook is provided in two versions: As a PDF document including all important information about the study programme as well as an online version with dynamic display options.
The appearance of these two variants will change in the summer semester of 2019: The PDF module handbook has a clearer structure and for the first time also takes into account the date of first use of modules and courses. The online display is now integrated into the Campus Management Portal for students and, unlike the PDF version, allows older module and course versions to be displayed. In addition, all curricular components such as subjects, modules and courses can be saved as bookmarks. By clicking on the study structure below, you will be taken directly to the corresponding area of the Campus Management Portal.

Notes on the current module handbook

Module Handbook - a helpful guide throughout the studies

The program exists of several subjects (e.g. business administration, economics, operations research). Every subject is split into modules and every module itself exists of one or more interrelated module component exams. The extent of every module is indicated by credit points (CP), which will be credited after the successful completion of the module. Some of the modules are obligatory. According to the interdisciplinary character of the program, a great variety of individual specialization and deepening possibilities exists for a large number of modules. This enables the student to customize content and time schedule of the program according to personal needs, interest and job perspective. The module handbook describes the modules belonging to the program. It describes particularly:

  • the structure of the modules
  • the extent (in CP),
  • the dependencies of the modules,
  • the learning outcomes,
  • the assessment and examinations.

The module handbook serves as a necessary orientation and as a helpful guide throughout the studies. The module handbook does not replace the course catalog, which provides important information concerning each semester and variable course details (e.g. time and location of the course).

Module versions

It is not uncommon for modules to be revised due to, for example, new courses or cancelled examinations. As a rule, a new module version is created, which applies to all students who are new to the module. On the other hand, students who have already started the module enjoy confidence and remain in the old module version. This students can complete the module on the same conditions as at the beginning of the module (exceptions are regulated by the examination committee). The date of the student's "binding declaration" on the choice of the module in the sense of §5(2) of the Study and Examination Regulation is decisive. This binding declaration is made by registering for the first examination in this module. In the module handbook, all modules are presented in their current version. The version number is given in the module description. Older module versions can be accessed via the previous module handbooks in the archive.

Begin and completion of a module

Each module and each examination can only be selected once. The decision on the assignment of a examination to a module (if, for example, an examination in several modules is selectable) is made by the student at the moment when he / she is registered for the appropriate examination. A module was completed or passed when the module examination was passed (grade 4.0 or better). For modules in which the module examination is carried out over several partial examinations, the following applies: The module is completed when all necessary module partial examinations have been passed. In the case of modules which offer alternative partial examinations, the module examination is concluded with the examination with which the required total credits points are reached or exceeded. The module grade, however, is combined with the weight of the predefined credit points for the module in the overall grade calculation.

General exams and partial exams

The module exam can be taken in a general exam or several partial exams. If the module exam is offered as a general exam, the entire content of the module will be reviewed in a single exam. If the module exam exists of partial exams, the content of each course will be reviewed in corresponding partial exams. The registration for the examinations takes place online via the self-service function for students. The following functions can be accessed on https://campus.studium.kit.edu/exams/index.php:

  • Sign in and sign off exams
  • Retrieve examination results
  • Print transcript of records

For further and more detailed information also see https://campus.studium.kit.edu/faq.php.

Types of exams

Following SPO 2015 exams are split into written exams, oral exams and alternative exam assessments. Exams are always graded. Non exam assessments can be repeated several times and are not graded. According to SPO 2007 exams are split into written exams, oral exams and non exam assessments. Non exam assessments are graded or not.

Repeating exams

Principally, a failed written exam, oral exam or alternative exam assessment can repeated only once. If the repeat examination (including an eventually provided verbal repeat examination) will be failed as well, the examination claim is lost. A request for a second repetition has to be made in written form to the examination comitee two months after loosing the examination claim. A counseling interview is mandatory. For further information see http://www.wiwi.kit.edu/hinweiseZweitwdh.php.

Additional accomplishments

Additional accomplishments are voluntarily taken exams, which have no impact on the overall grade of the student and can take place on the level of single courses or on entire modules. It is also mandatory to declare an additional accomplishment as such at the time of registration for an exam. Additional accomplishments with at most 30 CP may appear additionally in the certificate.

Further information

More detailed information about the legal and general conditions of the program can be found in the examination regulation of the program (http://www.sle.kit.edu/amtlicheBekanntmachungen.php).

  • Prüfung an-/abmelden
